A couple of people observed that things seem expensive over here. Here's a photo of a recent shopping trip:
Here's what I paid, with editorial comments:
ITEM GBP (Pounds) CDN PESOS
Flahavans Quick Oats (16 servings) 2.25 $ 4.32
(kinda bland - needs salt & raisins)
Taylor's Coffee Bags (10) 3.80 $ 7.22
(not much kick - use 2 to get going)
Sliced Ham (200 gr) 4.80 $ 9.22
4 Pink Lady Apples (sold by count) 2.28 $ 4.33
6 Easy Peel Oranges 1.50 $ 2.85
Beer, 0.5l (4 cans) (ONLY 1 / Day) 5.00 $ 9.50
Not Shown:
Benecol Buttery Spread (500 gr) 3.25 $ 5.80
("Proven to Lower Cholesterol" ?????)
6 Eggs (Medium, but look larger) 3.00 $ 5.70
Bread (can't remember, but seemed not bad)
Food bought at the store is sort of similar. I don't follow prices at home. Salad veggies seem to be not bad.
Beer is definitely cheaper, since I drink craft beer (no Lucky Lager for me)
Snacks: I treat myself to a Latte or Flat White and a pastry once a day. OUCH!
Easily 7 to 9 GBP ($13 to $17). I make a sandwich & carry a couple of fruit with me on outings), the snack is my caffiene & sugar treat.
Restaurant meals: A small meal (Main only) and a glass of wine can set you back $50. My cheapest was a burger, side salad and beer for $30.
Transportation: Also not cheap. I get a weekly Tube Pass for 44.70 GBP ($85), which allows me 2 zones in London, probably about 2/3 of the city and most of the attractions (not Kew Gardens, Julie)
The Train ticket to/from Bletchley cost $95
The exchange rate for GBP was 1.7 when I booked this trip. Lately the bank is charging 1.92.
Enuf of this, I'm off to somewhere. Not sure - maybe local smaller museums.
