Oct 21 - Laundry Adventures & the British Museum

Here I go again!  I guess you want to know the story behind that picture.

First thing this morning I went downstairs to check on the Laundry Room.  One of the washers was free so I raced upstairs, stripped the bed, grabbed the sheets and dirty clothes bag, then raced back down to get it going.  The cycle I picked would take 65 minutes.  Slow, but not a problem.

I worked on yesterday's blog for a while, then went down and put the laundry into the dryer.  This was going to take 90 minutes.  Slow again, I guess because it ventless.

Went down to get the 'dry' laundry.  Everything had wound up into a tight ball inside the sheets, and was still damp.

Since it was getting close to my entrance time at the museum I just spread everything out and left.

It's 4:30 p.m. and I'm back after being at the museum  Everything is dry (whew).

I'll have to do one more wash while I'm here - maybe 3rd time will be lucky.

British Museum

I got there just before noon.  The line was minimal and I went straight in.

Where to start?  I kind of wandered about aimlessly.  The British Museum is laid out pretty nicely (as opposed to the Science Museum) and their map includes very brief descriptions of the exhibits.  The map brochiure also has a "Don't miss" list.

That gave me an inspiration:  I'll just follow that list around and post it to the blog. Her's the list:

Don't worry if you can't read it - I'll chop out the titles for each one as I get to it.   Thenyou can 'Google" it for more info.  Here's the first

Well, that didn't work so well. Room 2a is a tiny room right beside the entrance - I think it has 'featured' exibits.  Here's what was there:

and the description that was underneath

Let's move to the next one:

Good - this looks correct

Onward:

Oops, another miss,- that gallery is closed for maintenance
But, I found it on the website:   Islamic Astrolabe

Next:

We're on a roll:

Here's the Cameo disc described above

Go find the North Stairs for the next item

This one is worth a couple of pictures

Still in Room  33:

Room 25 was hard to find, but it was worth the search

A closer view of some of brass plaques

Climb back upstairs.  I think its a plot to make you go up and down and all around the museum (it worked).

Now for the obligatory picture of the Rosetta Stone

Two more to go:

This was part of a 35 - 40 foot wall of a relief, so I included a couple pieces of it.

Last and certainly not least

The Parthenon sculptures occupy multiple rooms at the museum, so I've included a few pictures

There you have it - a quick trip through the British Museum.  I like the format, as I don't have to research all the descriptions (in order to confirm them) - I just have to plunk them in.

If you've something that interests you and you would like to see more about it, leave a note in in the blog comments and I'll have a look on my next visit.  Don't be anonymous - sign your name to your coment.

Tormorrow is the London Transport Museum.  Hoping to learn about the history of the Tube, amongst other stuff.

  1. Wow. This post must be the very definition of eclectic, Greg. Now I am deeply emerald green jealous of your time in this museum. I wish my computer was new enough that I could enlarge all your information signs. Guess I'll just have to book an hour or three with your phone when you get home. I somehow thought that you could read who was posting and have been replying as if you knew it was me. I'll use my name now, and ask that you do something--anything--Shakespeare related for me--and have a baguette for me on your France day. Dee

  2. You certainly hit the high lights of the British Museum. I also loved the Sutton Hoo helmet. Did you see that exhibition at the BM? Hope you’ll have a chance to get to Kew Gardens. It’s so worth it.
Now onto your laundry saga…. Very creative use of your cupboard doors I’d say. Ingenious.
I’m hoping you’ll have a chance to try a Pret a Manger for a quick meal and/ or Comptoir Libonais for a Middle Eastern meal. On to Harrods Food Floor to see how the other half lives! TTFN. Julie
